Awh Funk Dat!

Hey kiddies, let me introduce you Mr. Pete Babb, better known as Dj Enki

Back in the day before mp3s ran rampant and blog sites like this even existed, if you wanted to steal music...

...you traded tapes. Dubs, 1st generation, 2nd and 3rd copies with hissing so loud it competed with the vocals. Well, one of the first message boards I frequented I met some cool folks who hit me off with some real gems.

Enter Pete, hip hop affectionado / deejay living across the country in NC. I reached out to him cause he possessed what I considered the holy grail of all tapes, a copy of the infamous Hieroglyphics vs Hobo Junction battle from the Wake Up Show (circa '95). I think I ended up sending this fool 5 bucks through the postal services and hooked me up proper.

Since those days, I followed Enki's career and his eventual trek over here to the Bay Area. For 10 years now, he's become a mainstay here in the local scene while also reaching out nationally as well. He's the newest member of the Oakland Faders and has extended his production credits to the likes of OM recording artists Zeph & Azeem.

Still one of my favorite mix CDs that he put out a while back was entitled Sumthin' for Bumpin' in the Stabbin' Cabin. I hope that's somewhat self-explanatory. Its a little bit of funk, a little bit of hip hop and a whole lot of smooth grooves to Stab to.

Rock that Cumbia

"Carpinteria, California-based DJ Magneto describes himself as a "funk enthusiast, soul lover, dubwise master, sampling freak, burger blogger, and taco quality control consultant," and this exclusive mix he curated for the XLR8R podcast is as much fun as his title. Heavy on soul, hip-hop, Latin, and tropical sounds, this hour-plus-long mix sees the man born Manny Roldan mashing up different styles of beats, pushing high-energy dancefloor numbers, and supposedly there's a sample from The Price is Right buried somewhere in the music."

Left Coast Heavyweights

Don't Sleep. This one's gooood.

Here your dealing with SF/LA's best, DJ Sake 1 and J-Boogie. Volume one of the Leftism mix series.

Sake 1's has a weekly residency party at San Francisco's Levende Lounge by the mission, Pacific Standard Time or better known as PST. It apparently has been the prominent weeknight jumpoff. I've never actually gone myself but my friends swear by it.

And J-Boogie? Dude's been putting it down for OM records for a while now with his Dubtronic Science series. But I remember listening to him with DJ Raw B on a very low local radio frequency back in high school somewhere around 1996(wow!). Their weekly hip hop show Beatsauce , is apparently still going strong today and you can listen to archived shows online.

The Giant Peach describes the CD as "The mix of Downtempo, Soul, Hip-Hop, Afro, Latin, and Broken Beats is sure to please your earhole."
